Flowers for Funerals

History of funeral flowers

The use of flowers at a funeral stems back thousands of years to when the Neanderthals would collect bunches of flowers and place them on the body before burial. This not only helped disguise the smell but allowed them to honour the dead and simply made the body look prettier. Recently cave men's bodies have been exhumed with traces of pollen on the bones and the tradition has carried on ever since.
Flowers are the most simple and natural way to show your love for somebody, they cheer up the surroundings and help lift the mood of everybody who sees and smells them, which is exactly what you need when attending a funeral.

What's Appropriate?

There used to be lots of rules as to what flowers to bring. Fifty years ago you would have only seen carnations and chrysanthemums but 'Funeral Etiquette' seems to have relaxed more and now pretty much anything goes.

Of course things vary according to religion and taste. Christians tend to lean towards pale whites and lilac colours, whereas Hindus use bright and boisterous colours. At lastwishbook.com we don't want to tell you what to do. Largely, the choice comes down to common sense, personal choice and often the character of the person that has died. It's up to you!

If you are going to buy flowers online make sure they give you a good description of the product. There is usually a choice of wreaths and bouquets make sure the code matches the design you have chosen. Our advice would be to stick to something tasteful and not too extravagant.

KEEP IT SIMPLE!

Whatever you choose, anything that represents your love and sympathy will be appreciated. People are usually too busy grieving to worry. Whatever you do, remember to write a small note either to the deceased or the family to let them know your feelings. Your words of comfort will mean everything.
